Fjaðrárgljúfur canyons close to Kirkjubæjarklaustur in Eldhraun the huge lava field that burned in 1783-1784.
The canyons with the difficult name Fjaðrárgljúfur were formed about nine thousand years ago or at the end of the last ice age like most of the landscape we have today in Iceland. The bedrock in the canyon is however considered to be about two million years old.
They are about 100 meter deep and about two kilometers long. In the bottom of the canyon runs the river Fjaðrá.
At the canyons are restrooms, but no other facilities.
Location.
On road no 206, about 3 km from the ring road, no. 1., between Vík (73 km / 45,6 mi) and Kirkjubæjarklaustur (6 km / 3,8 mi)
