Icelandic fishermen sailed up to Greenland in search of sharks, but were aware of the poisonous nature of Greenland shark, which is why a specialized procedure to remove the toxins was adopted before it was eventually consumed. The privately-owned museum showcases all aspects of the shark hunt, the implements, costumes and other interesting aspects such as shark biology and its importance in Icelandic culture. Visitors are also offered bits of the pungent fermented shark, along with a shot of popular Icelandic schnapps and dried fish jerky. The Berserkjahraun lava field showcases a wonderful prism of amazing shapes, myriad spectacular colors, with contrasting topography.
It also has a variety of moss in different shades and colors. Bjarnarhöfn is also popular for its long-cherished history and features prominently in two Sagas – Eyrbyggja Saga and Heidarviga Saga. Bjarnarhöfn also has a lovely chapel that contains interesting artifacts, which is also popular among tourists.
