According to the Book of Settlements or Landnámabók, Þuríður sundafyllir and his brother Þjóðólfur, both astute sorcerers settled in Bolungarvík which is the Westfjords’ northernmost village, around 940 AD. Some of the town’s attractions include the Ósvör Maritime Museum, a natural history museum which boasts of the largest bird collection in the country besides a polar bear specimen, a replica of the old fishing outpost, a camping site, a swimming pool with water slide, a golf course, besides a bank, post office, bars, supermarket, convenience store, kindergarten, primary school, music school, community centre, gas station etc, It also has an interesting handcraft store and tourist information centre. Blessed with a beautiful surrounding, Bolungarvik has been a setting of various documentaries and movies including Nói Albínói, Sparrows etc, while its surrounding area is popular for sea-angling, hiking, horse riding, bird-watching and camping above lake Kirkjuvatn, on the banks of River Hólsá. Other tourist attractions nearby include Bolafjall mountains which is open to tourists during the summer, Skálavík bay, Jökulfirðir fjords, Hornstrandir nature reserve, Isafjarðardjup fjord, Denmark Strait and Isafjorður town which is barely 14 km away.
