Brimketill or ‘Oddnýjarlaug’ or ‘Oddný’s pool’ is an amazing natural lava rock pool on the southern end of Reykjanes peninsula, close to Grindavik and 61 kms from Reykjavik. Overlooking the raging Atlantic Ocean, the pool is located at the bottom of a precipice.
Formed as a result of volcanic eruptions in Reykjanes Peninsula, Brimketill constitutes lava rock and literally means ‘white-water cauldron’ in Icelandic, due to the constant battering from fierce waves and foam-churning.
Local folklore talks about a giantess, Oddný who lived in a huge cave in Háleyjabunga near Brimketill, with her husband, Hróar and son, Sölvi, who is said to have frequented the pool to bathe and wash clothes. According to the folk tale, one night she was so busy bathing and washing that she failed to see dawn breaking and as soon as the first rays of sun hit her, she turned into a stone. It is said the stone stood close to the pool for centuries and was eventually washed away after nature took its course. There is now a path that leads to the pool below, but safety is advised and visitors are warned against the hazards of nature, including lashing waves, rugged slope and tricky conditions.
Brimketill can be visited all year round, but summer is the best option. The region boasts of amazing places of tourist interest including Grindavik, Blue Lagoon, Bridge between Continents, Seltun, Kleifarvatn, Gunnuhver, Reykjanesviti etc.
