Brúarárfoss, the ‘hidden’ waterfall, which is also hailed as the bluest waterfall of Iceland, lies between Laugarvatn and Geysir, on the Golden Circle. The name Brúarárfoss literally translates to ‘bridge waterfalls’ as a stone archway once existed here several centuries ago and even though it was destroyed in an earthquake, the name remains (of course, local legends talk of the bridge being destroyed by a minion during a famine period).

Those who want to enjoy the beautiful waterfall and other smaller ones in the area have to trek about 7 km both ways along the Brúará River, through private land and vacation home neighborhood of Reykjaskógur and Brekkuskógur, as there is no other way of reaching the spot. The region is also popular for bird-watching and those who enjoy beautiful outdoors among nature. It is believed that Brúarárfoss gets its blue water from the melting Langjökull glacier, which is then carried by Brúará River.
Of late, various objections have been raised by landowners towards tourists whose numbers have risen dramatically over the years, who cause nuisance, litter around the area, harm the vegetation and surrounding ecology, besides disrespecting nature. So if you want to enjoy the ‘hidden’ azure waterfalls, ensure that you display all the concerns and take necessary permissions, if required.
