The glittering beach, located on Hornafjordur municipality on the South Coast, close to the Ring Road, midway between Reykjavik on the west coast and Egilsstadir towards the east coast, about 378 km and 322 respectively, is an unusual beach with umpteen sparkly floating icebergs.
It is essentially a strip of black sand beach, a part of the Breidamerkursandur glacier plain, near Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. During summer, the icebergs sparkle and shine like diamonds and the contrast it offers against the black beach is simply marvelous. Of course, it offers a spectacle all year round and is visited throughout, though it may pose a challenge during the peak winter months. The floating chunks of ice offer a visual treat, with various hues and colors, ranging from deep blue to vivid white and other turquoise blends.
The Diamond Beach, which is also a national conservation region, also attracts a large variety of seabirds, including the Arctic Tern and the Great Skua, which nest here. Though the beach is safe, climbing on the icebergs is not permitted, as it can cause harm, due to its slippery surface and sharp edges. In fact rigorous fines are often imposed on those showing disregard to warnings. So, if you’re coming to Iceland with a desire to pop the question to your mate, you won’t find a better sparkling option than the Diamond Beach!
