This awe-inspiring waterfall is often referred to as the ‘jewel of the Westfjords’ and also known as Fjallfoss or ‘the mountain falls’.
Located in the Arnarfjordur region of the Westfjords, Dynjandi, which cascades for 100 meters, is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland simply because it also has about seven other waterfalls in close proximity – Göngumannafoss, Hæstahjallafoss, Hundafoss, Strompgljúfrafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss, Kvíslarfoss, Bæjarfoss or Sjógarfoss.
The name itself translates from Icelandic to thunderous or booming or resounding and on approaching the waterfall one can see why. Dynjandi, the other waterfalls and the adjoining region are also protected as natural monuments. Of course, driving to the location has been made easy after the construction of the motor road to Isafjordur over Dynjandisheiði mountain pass.
For those who love hiking in beautiful surroundings there are a few short hiking trails around the region near Dynjandi waterfall, which is 30 meters at the top and almost double at the bottom. The entire region is under the municipal administration of Ísafjarðarbær municipality and is about 360 km from Reykjavik.
