Hailed as Iceland’s highest waterfall up until a decade ago, Glymur, located 71 km from Reykjavik and towards the right from Hvalfjörður Tunnel, is 198 meters high. In 2011, Glymur, fed by River Botnsá and situated in Hvalfjörður fjord, lost its pole position after Morsáfoss, measuring 240 meters in Morsárjökull, came to light.

One can also enjoy the waterfall by taking a Glymur Waterfall hike, also popular as Botnsdalur Hike, which is around 3 ½ hours and offers breathtaking views and through Glymshellir cave, across River Botnsá towards the top of the waterfall. Hiking in this region may prove to be an exhilarating and memorable experience, as there are several other smaller waterfalls along the way and Lake Hvalvatn towards the top. The summer months of June to August are the best time to visit the waterfall, as the access gets difficult during winter. Attractions in the vicinity include Thingvellir National Park, Öxarárfoss, Hraunfossar, Barnafoss etc. The cascading waterfall is close to Borgarnes and Akranes towns.
An interesting folktale in this region talks about how a farmer, who was left behind, found refuge in an elf woman’s home and after being found refused to keep his promise to the elf woman and was turned into a menacing whale, who met his end near the waterfall. If you love waterfalls, Glymur is not to be missed.
