With a population of about 3400, this fishing town remains one of the busiest harbors in Iceland and is known for its fishing industry, which contributes to about 40 percent of dried fish production in the country. The town which saw its first settlement in 934 AD, is today complete with innumerable shops, string of restaurants and hotels, car and horse rentals, bank, pools, a state-of-the-art camping site, Icelandic Saltfish Museum, Hopsnes Lighthouse and even a golf course, which is perhaps the only one in the world which includes a lava field.
There are also some interesting spots here for the nature lovers, including Þorbjörn, a 250-meter hill located in the northern parts, which can be accessed by foot and provides an excellent opportunity to observe the town and nature from its altitude.
