Hengill volcano is situated in the mountain area south of Iceland, about 30 minute drive from the capital Reykjavik. Though the volcano is very active with plenty of geothermal energy, the last eruption was 2000 years ago.
There are two major power stations in this mountain, Nesjavellir and Hellisheiðarvirkjun which provide most of the energy to the district of Reykjavik as well as the surrounding area. Today the volcano is a very popular hiking attraction, especially in the summer time as there are a lot of trails where you can see hot springs and fumaroles from up close. Incidentally, the most popular hiking trail close to Reykjavik is situated in Hengil where you can bathe in a warm river in a completely natural setting.
Approximately 30 km drive from Reykjavik to Hveragerði town. The hiking trail starts in the valley of Hengill, next to the coffee house Skálinn.
