Hnífsdalur, which literally translates from Icelandic to ‘knife’s valley’, is located on the north-western coast of Iceland and is about 458 km north of Reykjavik city. Many believe that the sharp line of the mountain range, which looks like a knife’s edge, may have influenced the name. Situated in the municipality of Ísafjarðarbaer, between Ísafjörður and Bolungarvik, the region is prone to avalanches. In 1910, Iceland recorded one of the deadliest avalanches of the 20th century in Hnífsdalur which claimed the lives of 20 Icelanders.

Later that year, in September, a 5.15-km-long tunnel was inaugurated between Hnífsdalur and Bolungarvik, which made access easier for residents of the region, many of whom find work in Ísafjorður. Ironically, there is no mention of the village in Landnámabók or the Book of Settlement, which today boasts of some of the biggest fishing companies including HG. Though the village does not offer all modern facilities, a section of tourists who prefer tranquil surroundings find Hnífsdalur, which has River Hnifsdalsa running through it, a great outdoor option. The region offers various hiking options in the valley and adjoining mountains. The sparsely-populated village also has interesting places of tourist interest nearby including the neighbouring village Bolungarvík, Skarfasker with its scenic viewing point, Óshlíð, Arnarnes, Ísafjörður etc. Undoubtedly, Hnífsdalur is a great place for those who love nature and enjoy being outdoors.
