Home to the highest-flowing hot-springs in Europe, ‘Deildartunghver,’ Húsafell, is former site of a rectory and is a church estate and extending farm in Hallmundarhraun, covering an area of about 100 km2 to the foothills of Eiriksjökull and Langijökull.
Situated 132 km from Reykjavik, near the Ring Road and close to Reykholt and Reykholtsdalur, Húsafell has been popular as a stop-over town from time immemorial, providing food and shelter to those traveling from the Westfjords and Snæfellsnes Peninsula to or from Þingvellir and Reykjavik, as is the case even today. Húsafell literally means ‘mountain house’ and Mount Tengil is said to have influenced the simple name. The region also offers two wonderful waterfalls located nearby, Barnafoss and Hraunfossar, besides the caves of Surtshellir and Vidgelmir. Trails and excursions across Kaldidalur highland and Arnarvatnsheiði highland, besides organized tours to catch a glimpse of the glaciers Langjökull and Eiríksjökull are in demand among tourists.
The Húsafell Stone, a legendary lifting stone used in international competitions, built by Pastor Snorri Bjornsson and stored in a sheep pen can also be seen in this town. Known to be a town of artists in the 19th century, Húsafell also has geothermal pools and birch forests.
