The amazing Hveragerði town, which literally translates to ‘field with hot springs’ is known by several names, including the obvious ‘hot spring town’, ‘flower valley’, ‘earthquake town’ etc. Located barely 45 km away from Reykjavik, on the Ring Road, one simply cannot miss its unusual beauty as you descend into the valley, if traveling from the capital or enjoy its beauty in the valley below as you spiral up on your way to Reykjavik.

The population of 2300 that dwell here have hot springs running in their backyards, quite literally and are known to have been growing fruits and vegetables that perhaps could not be cultivated elsewhere in Iceland, including banana and papaya. The umpteen greenhouses that grow a large variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers can be seen dotting the countryside.
Besides being the geothermal capital of Iceland, the town is also popular for its rich culture and plays host to an annual culture and family festival in August. There are also a few museums in Hveragerði, including Hveragerði Stone and Mineral Museum and Árnesingar art museum. River Varmá runs through this town from another popular tourist destination, Reykjadalur valley. Another peculiar fact about this town is that Hveragerði is perhaps the only town in Iceland to have its cemetery outside the town precincts.
