With extending farmlands and recreational spots, the region, which is also a scene from Njals Saga, is also gaining popularity for its scenic picnic spots and is popular for family outings. Hvolsvöllur, which has all modern facilities including camping facilities, hotels, restaurants and swimming pools, is also connected by air and a port, which offers services to Vestmannaeyjar or Westman Islands.
The town also has a protestant church, Stórólfshvolskirkja, built in 1930 which has a painting by Icelandic painter Þórarin Þorláksson, depicting Jesus Christ blessing children.
