The tower, which has 15 prism-fitted searchlights reflect light from a 10-metre-wide ‘wishing well’, beams light up to 4 km in the sky on clear nights. Iceland’s geothermal power grid uses 75 KW of electricity to illuminate the tower. About a million wishes collected by Yoko Ono lie buried under the tower. Work on Imagine Peace Tower was initiated on 9th October 2006, on Lennon’s 66th birthday and the project was inaugurated on his 67th birthday.

he tower lights up the sky each year, which can be seen from far and wide, from 9th October to 8th December. The project is a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, Reykjavik Art Museum, and Reykjavik Energy. Iceland was selected for the project as it is the most-peaceful country in the world and provides eco-friendly use of geothermal energy. ‘Imagine’ is also a popular song by John Lennon. Of course, the easiest way one can reach the island is by boat and there are various tours organised to Viðey Island from the Old harbour and Skarfabakki.
