Kerlingarfjöll is a mountain range located in the highlands near the Kjolur highland road, which is about 1500 meters high and part of the Tuya volcano system. The entire region, which hosts various hot springs and rivulets, is a natural reserve and very popular for hiking (‘the ring’ is well sought-after) and nature activities.

In fact, a highland resort too has been set up here over two decades ago, after a summer ski resort was dismantled. What’s really amazing is the texture and color of certain locations, which get its color red, yellow and green from various minerals from the hot springs.
In fact, the mountains here are composed of the red rhyolite stone. Some of the interesting exploring options at Kerlingarfjöll are its umpteen of peaks, pools, valleys, canyons, the glacier and include Kerling (a columnar rock), Sléttaskarð, Snækollur (the highest peak of Kerlingarfjöll), Hverabotn and Mt Höttur, Hveradalir (a must-see), Fannborg (part of the eastern Mountains Stratovolcano ridge) and Jökulfall Gorge (a spectacular canyon).
