Kvernufoss, perhaps dwarfed by the popularity of the magnificent Skogafoss, is missed by many who do not know that it is located barely 2 kms away. But those who know, revel in its uniqueness and splendor. Kvernufoss is located 156 km from the capital city and 30 km from dazzling and immensely-popular Seljalandsfoss.
Many also refer to Kvernufoss as ‘mini Seljalandsfoss’ or ‘Little Sister of Seljalandsfoss’ due to the fact that there are several similarities between the two waterfalls. Just like Seljalandsfoss, it is also possible to walk around this smaller waterfall; both are slippery and narrow behind the falls, besides being misty in windy conditions. Of course, just like Seljalandsfoss, it is not allowed to walk around the waterfall during winter. Kvernufoss, which falls from a height of about 30 meters, can also be seen from certain points from the Ring Road itself, though it lies hidden in the amazing Kvernugil gorge. The waterfall is located on River Kverná (not to be confused with River Kverná in Snæfellsnes Peninsula), which begins from the southern slopes of the magnificent Eyjafjallajokull.
The region close to the waterfall is serene and has moss-laden cliffs, lava rocks and scattered vegetation, and the unique combination of the narrow gorge and cascading waterfall creates a fascinating visual scene. There is also a beautiful short hiking trail nearby, which begins from Skogar Cultural heritage Museum and ends close to the waterfall.
