The out-of-the-world landscape, myriad striking colors with unusual combinations, besides the rhyolite mountains, rugged lava fields, hot springs and umpteen geothermal pools in unusual surroundings makes Landmannalaugar one of the most-sought-after hiking destinations in the world.
Often described as the ‘Pearl of the Highlands,’ this unique geological region is located 182 km from Reykjavik and offers an avid hiker the starting point for a long hike to Thorsmork region.
Part of the larger Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Landmannalaugar also has accommodation for campers and hikers, which is managed by the Iceland Touring Association, with a capacity of about 120 people and also boasts of a large camping area and added facilities.
However, It is best to book earlier to avoid disappointment. Landmannalaugar offers a perfect opportunity to discover Icelandic wilderness on a long and popular Laugavegur trail that generally lasts four days. While it is easier and more scenic during the summer it is possible to use the trail during the winter too depending on the knowledge of the region and snow and weather conditions.
