Látrabjarg also has the largest concentration of birds in Iceland and includes various species like puffin, white-tailed eagle, gannet, razorbill, Arctic tern, red-throated loon, snipe, auk, redshank, murre, kittiwake, guillemot, fulmar, ringed plover, snow bunting etc. In fact, it is believed that with about 40 percent of razorbills nesting here, Látrabjarg is the largest colony of razorbills in the world. Látrabjarg, which is 440 meters high, was declared protected in March 2021. The cliff, which also has white lines painted at strategic points warning people not to get too close, is divided into four parts – Keflavikurbjarg, Látrabjarg, Bæjarbjarg and Breiðavíkurbjarg. Some parts of the bird cliff, which also holds the largest concentration of seabirds in the world, could be fragile and pose danger to hikers, who are warned against venturing too close to the edge.
Látrabjarg is a bird-lovers paradise and every year, besides tourists, various researchers and ornithologists make a beeline for the cliff to study the various sea bird species, some of which are endangered.
