Skálanes, located towards the eastern side of Iceland, about 17 km east of Seyðisfjorður, is a nature and heritage centre set in a 1250-hectare nature reserve. Skálanes has now become a hub of research and monitoring activities and is a non-profit natural science research station. A member of International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic (INTERACT), it has tie-ups with various International and Icelandic researchers, besides natural science institutes.

Other activities include week-long academic excursions for professors and students of various universities, besides talks and guided hikes. The reserve consists of a rich ecosystem with varieties of flora and fauna, besides historical sites and includes a wide variety of native plants, wildlife like reindeer, arctic fox, about 47 bird species and over 80 archaeological sites. Skálanes has cooperation with University of Glasgow, Liverpool John Moores University, Southern Connecticut State University, Earlham College, Wesley College etc, which collaborate on various research topics in the field of ecology, archaeology, anthropology, conservation, natural history and biology.
Skálanes is home to various habitat types including marine, riparian, intertidal, freshwater wetlands, wet pasture, meadow, bare ground, dwarf shrub, cliffs, scree slopes etc. The reserve has also seen an ambitious afforestation drive in recent years and the target is to cover 111 hectare with an emphasis on Icelandic native species like birch, rowan and willow. The region also has various options for walks and hikes in the breathtakingly-beautiful surroundings.
