Skógafoss in Skógá the river coming from the mountain Eyjafjöll.
Skógafoss is one of the iconic sights for the South Coast. 60 meter high and 25 meter wide. The last waterfall in Skógá river coming off the mountain area called Eyjafjöll or in english translation “Island mountain”
Beside the waterfall are steps to the top and the view from the top is totally worth the few extra heart beats walking the steps. From the top is a view up to the mountain to several of the other 15 waterfalls in the river further up. This is also the beginning or end of the hiking trail Fimmvörðuháls to Landmannalaugar on the other side of the mountain. This hiking trail is one of the most popular during the summer and for a hiker in a good shape the hike can take around 10-12 hours. It is also possible to spend the night in one of two cabins on the mountain, but has to be booked in advance.
In an old folk tale it is said that one of the settlers, Þrasi hid his chest of gold in the waterfall. Later few young men tried to capture the chest of gold as they thought that they could see the end of the chest. They managed to hook the iron ring on one end of the chest and pulled, but the ring got loose and the gold was lost, but the ring is now kept in the folk museum at Skogar two kilometers east of the waterfall.
30 minutes walk east of Skógar museum is Kvernufoss, a small waterfall in a small canyon.
Location.
In the South Coast close to road no 1, between Hvolsvöllur (49 km / 30,6 mi) and Vík (32 km / 20 mi)
