Founded on the Great Þjórsá lava, sometime during 900 AD by Hansteinn Atlason, Stokkseyri wears a rustic charm and exudes the laid-back feeling. With so many options and things to see, do and experience it is now popular among the tourists too.
Set at a distance of 65 km from Reykjavik and close to Eyrarbakki, Stokkseyri, which has a population of barely 500 people but boasts of museums, workshop centers, lighthouse, church, swimming pools and offers outdoor facilities like quad, ATV and off-road driving, horse-riding and kayaking. The town has several museums including a pipe organ museum, wild-life museum, elves and trolls museum, northern lights museum and even a ghost center.
Stokkseyri is an ideal place for the entire family and also has several good restaurants and hotels. Stokkseyri, along with Eyrarbakki, is also popular for various northern lights viewing spots in the south coast.
