Svartifoss, which literally means ‘black waterfall,’ is situated 330 km south of the capital, in Skaftafell, Vatnajokull National Park. The waterfall that cascades majestically gets its name due to the amazing backdrop of natural black lava columns, which are hexagonal in design.
The unusual basalt columns are iconic natural wonders which are also seen in a few parts of Iceland, including Reynisfjara black beach that have inspired artists and architects alike, and the most common reflections are Hallgrimskrikja and the National Theatre.
Though Svartifoss does not have impressive high drops like some other waterfalls in Iceland, it makes up for its astounding surroundings. Svartifoss, which gently cascades from about 20 metres, is fed by River Stórilækur and is among a select group of waterfalls that drop from a cliff that comprises basalt rock. To reach the location one has to walk for about 2 km from the parking lot. Waterfall enthusiasts can also find other beautiful waterfalls in the vicinity, including Hundafoss, Þjófafoss, Magnusarfoss etc. There are umpteen hiking trails in the region and one can choose according to the level of difficulty, besides glacier walks too are options. Those keen on getting more information about attractions in the region and other related information may visit the Visitor Centre in Skaftafell, which remains open throughout the year.
Though the waterfall can be seen all year round, summertime is a best option, as the roads are clear and weather better. In 1961, Skaftafell was given the National Park status and nearly five decades later, in 2008, it was integrated with the Vatnajökull National Park. The amazing South Coast, where Svartifoss is located, is home to some of the most stunning sights of Iceland.
