The small village set amidst high mountains is sheltered against the pounding waves of the Atlantic Ocean, on its western side and one can witness many boats, small and big, busy in the fishing activities. The village was settled close to the late 19th century and the harbour was constructed only in 1940, while ÞórsBerg, the fish-processing plant was built in the 1950s. The serene coastal village, where fishing has been an occupation for centuries, is now inviting tourists, especially for sea-angling tours, which are quite popular in the region. In fact, the Iceland Sea-Angling Association has also set up a few summer houses in Tálknafjörður to promote the leisure activity, since 2006.
The geothermal activity in the northern region has led to the formation of natural hot pools, where hot water emerges from the ground. The Pollurrin or ‘the pool’, with its floating greenish algae, situated next to the hill, just outside the village, is also popular among locals as well as tourists. The swimming pools in the village are also warmed using this natural energy. From the tourist perspective it is a charming coastal village with most amenities and also has trout farms and multiple hiking trails on either side of the fjords, many of which were old riding paths.
