Þríhnúkagígur inside a 4000 years old volcano.
One of the magnificent attractions in Iceland is this extinct volcano that has not erupted for the last 4000 years.
The name, Þríhnúkagígur means, “three mountain craters”. This volcano is only about 20 km from Reykjavik, but still distant in the mountains called Brennistainsfjöll, close to the ski area in Bláfjöll. From the parking lot is about a 3 km / 2 mi hike through the lava. It is an easy hike, but still takes about 45 minutes.
It is now possible to book a tour to see this natural wonder with “Inside the volcano”. A special lift carries people down to the bottom of the volcano and the ride takes 6 minutes. Inside are unbelievable colors from the lava walls and the size is massive. The total depth is about 213 meters / 700 feet which equals three times the size of Hallgrímskirkja, the big church on the hill in Reykjavík.
Location.
From Reykjavík follow road no 1 towards Selfoss and turn right road no 417 towards Blábjöll. Drive that road to the parking lot for Inside the volcano. Distance from Reykjavik centrum is about 34 km / 21,2 mi.
