Urriðafoss in Þjórsá the second most volumnious rivers in Iceland.
In the river Þjórsá is the waterfall Urriðafoss, which is the second most voluminous waterfall in Iceland. The most voluminous river is Ölfusá i.e. two rivers combined, Sogið and Hvítá, but Ölfusá has no waterfall, so that is why Urriðafoss is the most voluminous waterfall in Iceland.
When you look at it, it does not look like to be bigger than e.g. Gullfoss or Dettifoss in the north, but the volume of water is bigger, on average 360 cubic meters per second. That equals about 5,6 full 40 foot containers, every second.
The river Þjórsá is a glacial river, which means the water comes from underneath a glacier, one of the big ones, Hofsjökull. It is the longest river in Iceland, 230 km.
In the highlands there are seven hydro plants, providing all Iceland with electricity. They are:
Búrfell, two plants, Sultartangi, Hrauneyjar, Sigalda, Vatnsfell and Búðarháls.
When visiting Urriðafoss in the summer, it is common to see fishermen trying for the salmon.
