The Vestmannaeyjar municipality comprises 12 islands including Heimaey, the biggest island, with a population of about 4350 residents, while the youngest, Surtsey, was formed in 1963. The town, which also has its own domestic airport, was in the news in 1973 when Eldfell volcano erupted and destroyed a major part of the town and forced the entire population to the mainland for over a month. Westman Islands is a popular destination for various reasons – volcanoes (Helgafell and Eldfell), the Eldheimar museum, great hiking trails, breweries, aquarium, boat tours, walking tours, besides being a popular location for puffin-watching during the breeding period.
Cliff climbing is also an option on one of the islands, while almost all visiting Vestmannaeyjar do enjoy a glimpse of the popular elephant rock.
