The picturesque Vestrahorn Mountain or Vesturhorn ‘west mountain’ or ‘west horn’, which has formed the back-drop of several films, documentaries and travel guides, is located on the Ring Road, 543 km south–east of Reykjavik, close to Höfn on the Stokknes Peninsula. The 454-meter-high mountain is composed of un-stratified plutonic rock, mostly gabbro but with some granophyric, which provides its dark and jagged look. One of the most-photographed mountains in Iceland, Vestrahorn is located close to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and East Fjords.

Close to Vestrahorn lies Eystrahorn or ‘east mountain’ or ‘east horn’ and a strange-shaped projection called Brunnhorn, which means ‘well horn’. The shore, where you can also watch seals, includes lava dunes which are constantly being shaped by water and wind. A few years ago Vestrahorn was in the news after the Bollywood flick Dilwale was shot in this location. What makes Vestrahorn Mountain a photographers’ delight is the fact that the beach stretches for a few kilometers, with water on both sides, providing mirrored shots to amateurs and professionals like. Umpteen northern lights photographs too have been taken at this breathtaking location which is very rich in natural beauty.
Vestrahorn is also an ideal location for bird-watching and has a few hiking trails. Nearby attractions include Vatnajokull National Park, Hornafjörður region, Mýrdalssandur, Hvalnes or ‘whale peninsula’ with a long black pebble beach. One can also watch the powerful Atlantic Ocean pounding the shores from this location.
