Vik or Vík í Mýrdal, located about 180 km from Reykjavik on the Ring Road, is a southernmost coastal village in Mýrdalshreppur municipality, which is now an integral part of ‘South Coast’ tours and is an important tourist destination for various reasons.
Acknowledged for its extremely beautiful scenic surroundings, Vik offers contrasting options to tourists, including visit to the famous Reynesfjara black beach, Reynisdrangar sea stacks, jagged cliffs and Viking tomb or paragliding option from a mountain peak nearby, besides offering multiple facilities at umpteen restaurants and hotels that dot the countryside.
The sparsely-populated village of about 750 residents, which lies to the south of Katla volcano, also has an Icelandic store, Ice Wear that offers discounted hand-knitted woolen clothes, souvenirs and other interesting items, with tax return option. The beautiful church Vikurkirkja, located at an altitude offers an exhilarating panoramic view, besides offering a trail for those keen on hiking to the top of the mountain. Other popular activities nearby include a visit to the abandoned US Navy plane, which features in various music videos and films, exploring Katla glacier ice caves and horse-riding.
On the outskirts, as one drives towards Egilsstadir, stands an unique stone arch at Dyrholaey. Of course, Vik always seems to feature in almost all travelers’ itinerary to Iceland.
