As the name “Iceland” indicates, snow, ice, cold, besides of course the countries latitude, it is ironic that because of the relatively mild winters in Iceland, winter sports like skiing are only practiced for about 3-4 months. That is the case in Reykjavik where the ski resort in Bláfjöll usually opens in late December and is closed again in April. The other ski resort in Skálafell is sometimes not opened at all as there is not enough snow in the mountains. This year Bláfjöll ski resort opened in the middle of January. There was enough snow earlier, but due to the pandemic the opening was delayed. The ski resorts in other parts of the country may be open longer, like in Isafjörður, Siglufjörður, Akureyri and other towns, as the northern part of Iceland usually has more snow than the southern part where Reykjavik is.
